Jim Denevan

I stumbled onto Jim's work this week and was mesmerized by his ENORMOUS works of earth drawings. They are so graceful and elegant!

In my searching I stumbled upon this video as well which I found fascinating. Not only does Jim seem to do amazing artwork but he organizes/designs community dinners where diners have a meal presented by a local farm outside in a field. It is a really interesting way to utilize his talents.

  1. Jim Denevan's work IS amazing! Tremendous scale! The images you have included make me wonder if his alter ego is on the team making crop circles....

I am always intrigued by the ephemeral qualities of work like this. It's here, it's left to the elements, it's in transition, it's gone. The works on the beach remind me of Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty, though his was a construction built into the Great Salt Lake (which I only got to see from the air). During my Goddard work, my friend who was married on the Jetty led us in an afternoon of making spirals on the beach (our West Coast cohort was in Port Townsend, WA). We continued to visit the work through the changing of the tides. Denevan's spirals and circles get kissed back into the waves, too. It's just such a deep practice for Life in some ways.
